The name Angostura refers to the city from which it originates, Angostura, now called Ciudad Bolívar, in Venezuela.
  
Originally, bitters were a powerful remedy designed by Doctor Johann Siegert - a Prussian doctor in the service of Simon Bolivar's army - to combat the fevers and intestinal disorders that ravaged the troops fighting against the independence of Venezuela.
  
It took this doctor four years of research to perfect this clever recipe composed of spices, natural herbs, of plant extracts, bitter and aromatic substances and orange peels.
